“The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 9:9–10, ESV)
In previous verses, David thanked and praised the Lord for his upright judgment and declared how “he has established his throne for justice.” Now he extends his application of this truth to its logical end. He is a “stronghold” for the oppressed, a safe place of retreat for those in this world who have been abused and exploited by the injustices of human judgment. Furthermore, David declares the Lord’s faithfulness toward those who seek Him. Those who know His name need never fear, for even in death, the Lord will protect them.
In our modern unrest and current socio-political upheaval, we can see a powerful example of the injustices that occur not just by the oppressors, but even at the hands of “the oppressed,” whenever men seek justice on their own—without God. The City of Man is incapable of executing righteous judgment for its citizens. May God grant repentance to the nations, that they turn from meting out their own “justice,” and seek refuge in the strong name of Jesus.
