“Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion! Tell among the peoples his deeds! For he who avenges blood is mindful of them; he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.” (Psalm 9:11–12, ESV)
The Psalmist now moves from praising the Lord himself to calling on the people to join him in singing praises to the Lord? Why? Because of the Lord’s deeds. The Lord is high and lifted up but he has not forgotten the lowly. He who is capable of executing righteous judgment is mindful of them, mindful of their circumstances. Also, recall in the previous verses, he is a stronghold for the oppressed. He is their refuge—if they will seek Him! God does not forget the cry of the afflicted. And His deeds among the nations is proof!
We live and move and have our being in a fallen world. Even in our most advanced countries—especially in our most advanced countries—there are children, elderly, forgotten, and unwanted peoples oppressed and exploited every day. There is no legislation, no political party, and no government program that will ensure absolute justice for the weak and oppressed. Politicians, though many of them feign the part, are not God. But the Lord, he is God. He sees. He judges the wicked and does not forget the cry of the afflicted. The best solution for solving the injustices of the world is for God’s people, wherever they are, to tell among the peoples—both the oppressed and the oppressors—the Lord’s righteous deeds, lest the oppressors forget “He who sits in Zion” avenges blood and swell in their pride and the oppressed forget and lose heart.
