But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me. -Psalm 13:5-6
In the third stanza, we see David anticipating the final state of God keeping his promise to Israel. David trusts because God’s love is steadfast. David now rejoices in his heart because God acts on his behalf, and finally, David sings because he flourishes under the bounty of God’s blessings.
Modern Christianity, in its misguided emphasis on trying to be “seeker sensitive,” (whether the actual language is used or not) often fails to be Sovereign sensitive. That is, we need to be reminded that it is only because of God’s covenant with us through Christ that we can be assured of God’s steadfast love toward us. Christ crucified is God acting on our behalf. This new covenant creates and cultivates human flourishing. And as it did in David’s case, it will rejoice the heart and move us to sing to the Lord.
