“With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down.” -Psalm 18:25–27
There is a sense in which God let’s man choose the pattern in which He deals with them. And the pattern he uses to deal with men is according to their inner character. That is, he shows mercy to the merciful and deals with integrity to the man who has integrity (e.g., blameless means intact or complete). To the clean of heart or pure, God deals purely. But to the crooked, God is sure let them eat the fruit of their character. Take Jacob, for example, whom God delivered over to Laban—who changed his wages these ten times—to teach him about his crooked ways.
God gives salvation to the humble but to the haughty he gives a measured dose of humility!

I agree and he lets man conform to what image the man desires. God does encourage us to conform to Christ though through the Holy Spirit.

Indeed, He does!
