“More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.” -Psalm 19:10
John Calvin says of this passage, “If the law did nothing else but command us, how could it be loved, since in commanding it terrifies us, because we all fail in keeping it? Certainly, if we separate the law from the hope of pardon, and from the Spirit of Christ, so far from tasting it to be sweet as honey, we will rather find in it a bitterness which kills our wretched souls.”
This is most certainly true. But I would add those who reject the righteousness of God will be naturally and most assuredly enticed and ensnared by the love of carnal pleasures. But the Law, testimony, precepts, commandments, and service of the Lord allure the elect of God by their sweetness and refinement when we compare them to the carnal pleasures and treasures of the world (1 John 2:15-17).
Those who have been imparted with God’s spirit and are partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) find a holiday at the beach much more alluring than making mud pies in the backyard.
