“O Lord, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your salvation how greatly he exults! You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah” -Psalm 21:1–2
The King’s desire here is likely his strategy or plans for war. God has blessed his battle plans and given him the victory. For this, the Psalmist rejoices. But there remains a Christological aspect to this verse—and to the Psalm. Like David, who is representative of Israel, Christ reigns on behalf of his church victorious over the enemy of mankind. Since Christ has led the way and made intercession for the church, we can rejoice to know that our prayers on behalf of the church will also be heard and answered. On account of Christ, they will not be rejected.
