“For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head. He asked life of you; you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. His glory is great through your salvation; splendor and majesty you bestow on him. For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence. For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.” -Psalm 21:3–7
There are numerous things going on here. First, the expression “meet him” is one of a friendly confrontation for the purpose of bestowing honor. We see this similar event with Abraham and Melchizedek: “For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,” -Hebrews 7:1
Next, the passage is ripe with the thanksgiving of the people to the Lord for the blessings he has bestowed upon their king. The Lord met David with: A crown of fine gold; an eternal dynasty; glory, splender, and majesty, forever; the joy of the Lord’s presence. The song points to much more than indulgent blessing poured out on David; it is elevates the minds of Israel to contemplate the eternal kingdom that will be realized in David’s successor, Christ.
Finally, the section concludes by highlighting the reason for the king’s hope, confidence, and unwavering resolution. It is because of the steadfast love of the Most High. This alone is the source of all our confidence in the face of life’s battles.
