“He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” -Psalm 23:3
One of the great joys of having the Lord as our shepherd is the abundance and depth of grace that he bestows on his sheep. Not only does he meet our every physical need, but he meets our spiritual needs as well.
He restores (i.e., converts, makes anew) our souls and leads us in paths of righteousness (i.e., in the right way), not because we are good or because we deserve it, but for his name’s sake—because he is good. All his blessings flow from his free and sovereign goodness.
This is why we, his sheep, are wise to say with the writer of Proverbs, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” -Proverbs 3:5–6
