“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” -Psalm 27:4
David longs for the constant presence of The Lord, which is typified by Levitical priests who stand in his service perpetually. This is David’s single-minded purpose. He has asked one thing of the Lord and this is it: to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and inquire in his temple. This is what he seeks after, not gold or fame or empire.
Note that in David’s day, the Temple of Solomon had not been built. The tabernacle was the temple to which David referred. A temple is not a building per se, but a plot or area which is sanctified for the singular purpose of worship.
Oh to have ruler in our own day whose singular purpose was the presence of the Lord—true flourishing—and not power, wealth, and legacy.
