“I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up and have not let my foes rejoice over me.” -Psalm 30:1
The first five verses of the Psalm describe David’s rescue from the pit, his deliverance from death itself, the place the Jews called Sheol. The expression “drawn up” is the Hebrew, דָּלָה dâlâh, and means to “dangle,” “let down a bucket,” or “draw out water.”
It is not apparent whether David also fell sick of the plague that killed the 70,000 Israelites over his sin, but was healed, or if the language is metaphorical. In either case, David’s response to being rescued is to extol the Lord (i.e., make large or tall, exalt on high). There is another element to David’s rejoicing. Not only has the Lord spared his life, but the Lord prevented an occasion for David’s enemies to have something to gloat about.
