“Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” -Psalm 30:4–5
Instead of begrudging God’s chastisement, we should give praise and thanksgiving because the works of God are holy works just as his name is holy. When he chastises his children—and he does chastise he children (Hebrews 12:5ff)—his anger is momentary. But his favor is eternal and he chastises his children that it may be so. While there are times weeping may consume our night, as the writer of Hebrews instructs us, let us not be weary of his rebuke; instead, let us endure it because the peaceable fruit of righteousness comes in the morning (12:11).
