“Let them be put to shame and disappointed altogether who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me! Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the Lord, who delights in the welfare of his servant!” Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long.” -Psalm 35:26–28
David contrasts two groups of people and prays that each receive their just reward. There are those who rejoice at David’s calamity and he prays the Lord will clothe them in the shame and dishonor they deserve because, as the previous passage had revealed, they hated him without a cause and sought to slander and destroy him.
Then there are those who delight in his righteousness, his right position before the Lord, and he prays they will receive the satisfaction of seeing their king vindicated. There is great comfort in knowing God deals justly with the king because that means he deals justly with his subjects.
When God gives each party their just due, it will be David’s turn to give God his just reward–praise. And it won’t be weak or short-lived praise, but that which is fitting for such a God as our Lord, praise that continues all day long.
