“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.” -Psalm 37:23–24
The theologian, Edward Tesh, suggests a prose translation of the passage that reads like this: “By the Lord the steps of a (righteous) man are made firm (secure), and he (the Lord) takes delight in his way. Even though he should fall, he will not be hurled prostrate, for the Lord continues a firm grasp of his hand.”
David assets that the righteous man possesses every confidence because he has God upholding him and picking him up if he falls down. It reminds us of the Solomon’s proverb which says, “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” -Proverbs 28:1
In this life there will be ups and down, good times and bad. We will stumble and fall, but the righteous person has nothing to fear because we have the assistance of the Lord. And if we stumble and fall, it will be momentary, not permanent, because the Lord is holding our hand.
“for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.” -Proverbs 24:16
