“As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!” -Psalm 40:17
These words of encouragement, comfort, and petition are a suitable close to the Psalm that opened with a patient and hopeful anticipation of the Lord’s salvation.
Indeed, we, like the Psalmist, are both poor (in spirit) and needy (for deliverance from our sins and enemies), but we can take heart and be encouraged by the fact that the Lord takes thought of us.
Peter takes stock in the notion and exhorts believers to “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” -1 Peter 5:6–7.
The Lord cares. He is our source of help. He is the one we need constantly to be reminded to seek out for deliverance. Praise God, he is seldom early, never late, but always right on time.
