“The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.” (Psalm 16:5–6, ESV)
David addresses the Lord directly and expresses his great joy in the inheritance he had received from Him. Like the priests, whose inheritance is not in land, but in the Lord, directly (Numbers 18:20), David thought of God’s blessings as the best inheritance a person could receive. In other words, like an Israelite whose tribal inheritance guarantees him a valuable piece of property, David had been blessed with a wonderfully full life.
Moreover, like David, the Christian’s lines have also fallen in pleasant places. We have been given Christ, the richest and most beautiful of inheritances.
