“Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people! Selah” -Psalm 3:8
Verse 7 is a prayer to God cried out in humility, but verse 8 is a doxology and benediction. David acknowledges that God is sovereign and salvation is the Lord’s to dispense or withhold as He pleases. But God is not only sovereign, He’s also good and just and gracious–something David knows from personal experience.
He then closes with a benediction of blessing on the people of God—those who remained faithful to the throne established by God himself. David is not asking for anything not already promised in the covenant established by God with His people, Israel.
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” -Deuteronomy 30:19–20
