Proverbs 17:7 (ESV): Fine speech is not becoming to a fool; still less is false speech to a prince.
Proverbs 19:10 (ESV): It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury, much less for a slave to rule over princes.
Proverbs 26:1 (ESV): Like snow in summer or rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool.
These aphorisms remind us that foolishness and the inherent results of virtue and wisdom are incongruent with one another. To be clear, fine speech, luxury, and honor are typically inherent of a virtuous and wise life. Vain speech, poverty, and ignominy are inherent of a vicious and foolish life. Each effect is the result of a specific cause and the two can’t get mixed up, naturally. The opposite result can only be added artificially. These Proverbs remind us the artificial addition of opposite results is not fitting; it is unnatural and will be readily known.
To use a modern idiom, it would be like putting perfume on an onion. Or better still, it would be like spraying aerosol fragrance after someone makes a long trip to the toilet. That canned floral scent only aggravates the smell. It doesn’t clear it up or make it better. So it is with fine speech, luxury, or honor when added to a fool.
