Psalm 14:4–5 (ESV): Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord? There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous.
The fact that the evildoer has no knowledge reveals his brutish nature, one that like the animals without reason, feels no shame and believes he has done nothing wrong in his oppressive persecution since this is the way of the world. He is like the woman in Proverbs 30:20 (ESV): This is the way of an adulteress: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, “I have done no wrong.”
But as C. S. Lewis notes in the Weight of Glory, ‘In the end that Face which is the delight or the terror of the universe must be turned upon each of us …, either conferring glory inexpressible or inflicting shame that can never be cured or disguised.’ The oppressor will be in great terror as he experiences the latter.
