“The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble. The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.” -Psalm 37:39–40
The Psalm ends with what one commentator called “calm objectivity.” In other words, in response to the opening line, “Fret not,” the Psalmist concludes that because the righteous take refuge in the Lord, their salvation comes from the Lord.
He is the stronghold in trouble; run to him. He helps the righteous and delivers them from the wicked; take refuge in him.
The Lord, not our own prowess, scheming, or ingenuity, is our Savior. Let us trust in him and not ourselves–and not in chariots (Psalm 20:7). Fret not because of evildoers; be patient, and look to the future when his promises shall be fulfilled and the wicked shall be no more. And, as Julian of Norwich exclaimed, “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.”
