“All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.” -Psalm 22:27–28
David now turns his attention from the congregation to the world at large. This is a natural transition as Israel was to be a kingdom of priests to the rest of the world.
“Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”” -Exodus 19:5–6
Again, we see the prophetic nature of this Psalm as both the mission and telos of Christ and the gospel. Christ suffered for our sins and rose victorious over death, and now sits at the right hand of the father ruling over the nations. And when God’s people obey his word, keep covenant with him (through Christ in weekly covenant renewal worship), and give thanks publicly for answered prayer and divine blessings, all the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the nations shall worship before him.
May this be a reminder and encouragement to us of the great commission given to the church of God and the eschatological realization of its purpose.
“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”” -Matthew 28:18–20
“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” -Habakkuk 2:14
All shall remember, all shall turn, all shall worship, for Christ is king and ruler over all.
