“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!” -Psalm 34:1–3
David expresses his own commitment to praise the Lord and boast of him, continually. Then immediately invites the congregation of the humble to join him: “Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!”
In this context, “the humble” are those in Israel who are lowly and oppressed, the poor and afflicted. While it might not seem the humble have much to praise God for, David invites them to join him because he knows the story of his own humble beginnings, as well as the humble beginnings of Israel.
He was a shepherd boy who cared for lowly sheep, leading, protecting, and nourishing these stupid, skittish animals all alone, day and night, rain or shine. It was not the most desirable task. Because he was a man after God’s own heart, the Lord took him from the hillside to the hill of Zion where he shepherded God’s people.
Israel were bondslaves in a foreign land and God brought them out, parted the Red Sea for them, fed them with manna, and delivered them into the promised land.
Let us remember, it is the meek (i.e., the humble) who will inherit the earth and delight themselves in abundant peace.
“But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.” -Psalm 37:11
““Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” -Matthew 5:5
David, declaring that his soul makes its boast in the Lord, invites the humble hear and be glad, then join him in magnifying the Lord so they can exalt his name together! The invitation still stands.
