“But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!” -Psalm 31:14–15
David emphasizes the fact that he trusts God with his life, that he has committed his existence into the hand of the Lord, and then prays for God to deliver him from the hand of his enemies, from the hand of those who persecute him.
There is no contradiction between David’s belief and his prayer. God is sovereign over the seasons and occasions of our lives. Though we wrangle and fret about many things, we must be reminded that our times (et, seasons of life) are in his hands and not in the hands of our enemies, especially that enemy we all share, death. The struggles, blessings, and even the days of our coming and going are not arbitrary or capricious. They are designed and sustained by God for his glory and for our benefit.
Thus, we can joyfully and confidently pray for God’s will, and not the will of our enemies, to be done. And with that, we can trust, that even when the hand of the enemy seems strong, God’s hand is bigger, stronger, and absolutely sure. Moreover, we know this, too: God’s hand is good.
