“Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” -Romans 8:34
Commenting eloquently on this passage, the Reformer, John Calvin, says, “As no one by accusing can prevail, when the judge absolves; so there remains no condemnation, when satisfaction is given to the laws, and the penalty is already paid.”
It is Jesus Christ who has paid the penalty for our sins in his death. Not only so, but the Father has approved of his payment (declared it satisfactory) by raising him from the dead in vindication of his righteousness. Now Christ sits (indicating his work is finished) at the right hand of God, the place of highest honor.
Finally, Christ will come again to judge the living and the dead (Acts 10:42, 1 Peter 4:5), but this final clause gives us further confidence of our standing before God. By his very presence on the Father’s throne, Christ indeed is interceding for us (believers). That is not to say he is continually offering his blood as some have surmised but as B. F. Westcott notes, “His glorified humanity is the eternal pledge of the absolute efficacy of His accomplished work. He pleads, as older writers truly expressed the thought, by His Presence on the Father’s Throne.”
