“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20, ESV)
There is a righteousness far above just following the rules, and you will need to attain that righteousness to enter the kingdom of Heaven.
Your good works will never be righteous enough.
You will have to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength—always. You will have to love your neighbor as your own self—always.
You will have to live in perpetual peace, always reconciled with God, with your neighbor, and with your own conscience. If you can’t do this, you will not enter the kingdom of Heaven.
Your only hope will be to turn to the One who did and plead for mercy.
“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:” (Romans 3:21–22, ESV)
