Psalm 14:6 (ESV): You would shame the plans of the poor, but the Lord is his refuge.
The original language is a bit difficult and thus the meaning here is disputed, but the general sense seems to be that the ungodly, though fools themselves and in preeminent danger of the terror of the Lord, mock the wise whose refuge is in the Lord—as if they were the foolish ones. Said another way, it’s an ancient version of gaslighting and virtue shaming.
But this is to be expected in every generation. It should not surprise us when we are persecuted or mocked for trusting the Lord.
2 Timothy 3:12–13 (ESV): Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
But woe to the Christian who, in the name of being “relevant” joins the ungodly in shaming the poor.
