The Smile of the Father

Scott Postma — May 11, 2020

Crumbs Logo“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:10, ESV)

No one wants to be harassed or mistreated–especially for doing the right thing.

Yet, Jesus warns, this is the way life will go for those who follow him.

St. Paul confirms this is true: “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,” (2 Timothy 3:12, ESV)

That does not mean we should seek it out. We are not sadists and the promised blessing is not for foolishness.

We should, however, seek out the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

This will secure three things for us: the frown of the world, the abundance of provision (Matthew 6:33), and the smile of the Father.

But beware: the righteousness in view is not one we earn for ourselves by trying harder to do better so the Father will approve of us.

It’s a righteousness apart from the Law which is given to us whom the Father has smiled on (Romans 3:21-24 cf. Ephesians 2:8-10).
