“O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.” -Psalm 4:2–3
In response to the men who turn honor into shame, who love vain words, and who seek after lies, David declares his sanctified position as one of God’s own, not strictly as an individual who has willed as much (contrary to Absalom), but as the chosen king of the nation that God has established through His covenant with Moses, and renewed again in David.
We succeed in understanding the passage when we keep in mind God is Israel’s suzerain and David (as the representative head of Israel) is his vassal. Now, as promised, Christ is the heir to the Davidic throne and the mediator of the new covenant. Those who are in covenant with God via union with Christ, Christians as we are now called, are Israel–though not according to the flesh (See Romans 9:6-8 cf. Galatians 3:16-29).
If you are in Christ, God has set you apart for Himself; the Lord hears when you call to him!
