The Lord’s Counsel

Scott Postma — September 22, 2020

“I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:7–8, ESV)

To bless is to speak well of or to praise. David praises God for directing and advising him. The Lord’s counsel is not like that of the human heart that “rebukes” us when we lay our head on our pillow at night. The Lord’s counsel is that which gives us confidence and peace.

There is a kind of sleeplessness that comes from worry and anxiety, and there is a kind of sleeplessness that comes from contemplating the word of God, hearing His counsel, and recognizing his peace. May we always be able to bless the Lord for the latter.

Amen Scott. It is wisdom to know the difference. Only by spending time with the Lord can we know.
