“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.” -Psalm 33:6–9
David continues his assertion that the word and work of the Lord are reliable and inseparable by recounting the Creation narrative and the Exodus narrative. By God’s word alone, he spoke the heavens and angels into existence. By God’s word alone, he parted the Red Sea and the Jordan, putting the waters of the deep in heaps that God’s people might pass through them on dry ground.
What God decrees by the wise counsel of his own free will comes to pass with absolute certainty and without question. To know that everything we see and know came into existence by God’s command reveals the magnanimity of his glory and ought therefore to excite our praise. To know that because of God’s command, Israel was indeed delivered from Egypt should increase our faith in his goodness and faithfulness.
There is nothing which God decrees that does not come to pass. Wherever he speaks his word, we can be sure his work will be accomplished. He speaks and it comes to pass. He commands and it stands firm. Shouts of praise and new songs of thanksgiving belong to God!
