“Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.” -Psalm 36:5
This is a turning point and from this point until the end of the Psalm, David turns his attention to the Lord. David contrasts the treachery of the transgressor as revealed by the oracle with the steadfast love and faithfulness of the Lord as revealed by Scripture and by experience. The metaphor he chooses to use—love extending the heavens and faithfulness to the clouds—is meant to communicate their vast and unmeasurable nature. The heavens and the clouds are not different standards of measure (e.g., The Lord’s steadfast love reaches all the way to the heavens while his faithfulness reaches only to the clouds). This is a parallelism, as the heavens (sky) and the clouds would have been considered similar in nature, only the latter is more concrete in some ways than the former.
In stark contrast to the transgressor, the goodness of God is vast and immeasurable.
