“Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your righteousness to the upright of heart! Let not the foot of arrogance come upon me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away. There the evildoers lie fallen; they are thrust down, unable to rise.” -Psalm 36:10–12
Finally, David moves from praising God for his munificent mercy to petitioning God to accomplish his redemptive work, a work he rejoices in as having already been accomplished in verse 12.
Said another way, David has evaluated the oracle that revealed the wickedness of the transgressors i.e., law breakers and unbelievers (1-4), and contrasted their lovelessness with the steadfast love of God which saves, protects, and blesses those who love and follow the Lord (5-9), and how he prays for the accomplishment of his grace (10-11) and rejoices in it as though it has indeed been accomplished (12).
Here is where we all walk: in a world of transgressors governed by a God who is steadfast in his love and faithful in his justice. Let us take comfort in his security, feast at his bountiful table, drink at the fountain of life and light, and rejoice in both his munificence and his providence that assures us that the victory belongs to the righteous.
“…the evildoers lie fallen; they are thrust down, unable to rise” (vs. 12).
