“He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah” -Psalm 24:5–6
The one with “clean hands and pure heart,” who worships God in spirit and in truth will be blessed and receive righteousness from God. This is not strictly individual in nature, though it starts there, but it is national and generational in nature as well.
Blessings meant flourishing: the fruit of the ground, the fruit of the womb, the fruit of one’s labors, recognition and legacy. God told Abraham, “I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”” -Genesis 22:17–18
In it’s primary context, righteousness refers to just government, a just ruler. It is interesting that one of the primary goals of the Ancient Greek philosophers was to discover how to achieve and maintain justice in the city (i.e., Plato’s Republic). Naturally, blessing and righteousness are tied together because only under a just administration can one truly experience blessing.
Most importantly, receiving blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation is Messianic (Isaiah 46:13; 56:1; Romans 3:21-26).
God gives Jesus to all those who believe!
