“I hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, but I trust in the Lord. I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have known the distress of my soul, and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place.” -Psalm 31:6–8
At the heart of this pericope, David is contrasting the worthlessness of idols to the faithfulness of the Lord. But he does so by setting in contrast his hate for those who pay regard to worthless idols and his own joy and gladness as a result of trusting the Lord. The Lord has seen his affliction, delivered him from the hand of the enemy and gave him a solid footing in life. The worthless idol has done none of those things because it literally has nothing to offer. It provides no value to human flourishing and all people become like those they worship.
